A thick, woven hemp or linen Marine Nationale kit bag, dating from the early 20th century. Noted flaws - several hand repairs and splits throughout, part of the stitching on the left hand leather strap has come away, repairs to the base - please see photos. The outer surface has been coated with a black water-proofing substance and the original natural colour can be seen in image 2, two shoulder straps, drawstring top with hand stitched holes, hand painted in white as coming from the Amiral Aube, a French naval armoured ship which patrolled the English Channel during WW1. The Aube was built at Saint-Nazaire in 1904 and scrapped in 1922. The bag is not suitable for day-to-day heavy use due to its age, but would make a great display piece as part of a WW1 or naval history collection. No structure when empty, weighs just under 1.7kg.
Measures H31” x W16” at the base.
