Vintage 1920s French theatre costume - antique opera jacket - military dragoon tail coat - 36” chest

A red and black wool and velvet theatre costume, possibly by renowned costumier Aristide Boyer, dating from the 1920s. Noted flaws - velvet breastplate - staining and marks to the cotton backing, surface damage at the lower centre front right. Jacket - various areas of surface damage and small holes throughout, particularly at the cuff and tail areas, uneven and faded colour to the integrated waistcoat, some damage to the sleeve linings, it has been taken in by around 1” at both sides - this could be unpicked to give a larger size - please see photos.
Possibly made by the house of opera and theatre costumier Aristide Boyer, likely for an extra. Operas by the likes of Bizet, Massenet and Saint-Saens became hugely popular social events in France and the costume houses kept huge inventories.

Military-style waistcoat and tail coat made from wool and fully lined in cotton and satin, the integrated waistcoat features hand sewn buttonholes, the cutaway tailcoat features a stand up collar, velvet facings, full set of original French fire brigade buttons and a button-on velvet ‘breastplate’.
Excellent quality, around 100 years old, great for demonstration or display or even wearing.

Measurements taken lying flat -

Pit to pit - 18” (36” doubled, with around 1” at either side to let out, which would take it up to a 40” chest)
Shoulders - 16”
Arms - 25”
Length - 21.5”, tails - 36”
